Are You Taking Too Much Supplements?

Are You Taking Too Much Supplements?

It is easy to give in to promotional hypes like healthier and longer life, the next fountain of youth, the elixir for all diseases, and the new wonder product of this generation. Someone who is religious in living a healthier lifestyle is not far from using nutritional supplementation. Through the years, prices for these products have also dropped, making them more accessible to the public. But how sure are you that you are doing the right thing? How sure are you that what you take to get healthier cannot do the exact opposite effect to your body? How sure are you that you are not wasting money and time on all of your dietary supplements? Are you taking too much?

Contrary to popular belief, most of these products do not really deliver the promised benefits on their labels. It is easy to make false claims as FDA is not strictly monitoring them, more so testing them. They are not classified as medicines for a reason after all. Many people take multiple products at the same time even if they do not even need all of them. Before you shell out some cash, make sure you know your daily nutritional requirements and the tolerable limits. Without the knowledge, you may just be taking in more toxins than nutrition. The rule of thumb here is that more is sometimes less. Benefit more from using less.

Vitamin C is often sold in 500mg pills. Since the body can only absorb 200mg at a time, you are just wasting more than half of what you paid for. Vitamin E is readily available in two forms with 200 to 500IU as the standard, but you should always opt for the natural vitamin E in less than 150IU. Studies have already confirmed that taking in more than 300IU everyday may lead to certain cancers like lung cancer and stomach cancer. There is no need to take Vitamin D as 10 minutes under the sun is enough to supply your needs for two days.

Albeit the safety of antioxidants no matter the amount, it is still better to consult a nutritionist or a doctor to avoid complications. Most are from plant sources, which may also trigger negative reactions on your body. Natural is not always healthy, some can cause hormonal imbalance. So before you give in to hypes, do your assignment first.

Is There a Modern Fountain of Youth?

Is There a Modern Fountain of Youth?

The issue of aging and longevity of life span caused the age-long search for the fountain of youth. If folklores describe it as a stream of miraculous water that will bring immortality to those who will drink it, modern scientists tell a totally different story. In this generation, you do not have to climb jagged cliffs and swim the most treacherous seas just to obtain the so-called best possible solutions to your graying problem. There is no chanting required. Just dial and talk to a health store representative and he will do the rest for you. There is no need to take a deadly journey. Just ride a cab to the nearest health shop and buy the dietary supplement that promises you a younger you. You do not even have to drink it. Sometimes, you slather it all over your body or simply eat it. But with all the wonders modernity brought to mankind, have experts really found the fountain of youth?

The answer is a resounding no. There is no such thing is immortality, but anti aging factors exist. More than beauty bars and creams, they often exist in dietary supplements but the truth is, it is not what you take but what you have been taking all these years. A few years back, vitamin E was said to be the elixir for aging people. Businessmen even came up with the idea of producing a synthetic version to cater to the increasing demand. Now it is an open secret that this can be bad for your health. Vitamin C, which paved the way for Linus Pauling’s Nobel Price in 1954, was also said to prolong cell thread and make aging slower. Now, people know that there is a tolerable limit to what human can use. With all these myths, mankind’s life expectancy still declined not only in the US but across the Western world as well until the early 90s.

The demand for the next fountain of youth is insatiable. Today you have the answer, the next day you still grow older. The magic here is not actually what you take, but what you give to yourself in the form of lifestyle. Taking many products will just damage your body. Remember that aging is a life-long process that needs a life-long foe. That foe is a healthier practice and not sudden quirks to use certain hypes.

Can Antioxidants Really Cure Cancer?

by on Sep.20, 2010, under Uncategorized

Can Antioxidants Really Cure Cancer?

Cancer is primarily caused by free radicals in the body due to wrong diets, poor nutrition, pollution and genetical factors. To oppose the bad effects of these free radicals, antioxidnts work as the human body’s first line of defense to stop the possibility of cell damage that can lead to cell malignancy, or the rapid multiplication of cells without the aid of apoptosis (programmed cell death). Reading the above sentence may bring you to the conclusion of a new long-sought solution to the big C. Sorry to disappoint you, but you miss the target.

Anti oxidants can in fact help prevent cancer by cleaning our system from unwanted chemicals but that is not a guarantee. In clinical studies that also involved the use of placenta (empty medicines), the consensus clearly delineated their important role in fighting certain degenerative diseases. But until now, scientists are having a hard time finalizing the conclusions regarding in vivo experiments.

Resveratrol, glutathione, green tea extract and grape seed extract are the favorite candidates and they truly show promising results. Resveratrol is said to amplify the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy against some cancers but the common factor is not really clear. It has an effect but the question is still why and how. Glutathione is also effective in killing cancer cells if and only if, the human body can contain huge amounts which you will not get from mere supplements alone. Green tea extract performed great against leukemia cells in one clinical study but one is not enough. Further studies should be done but chances of conducting similar trials are not very clear as of this moment. Phytochemicals like grape seed extracts have cancer fighting characteristics but making use of these compounds still leave experts dumbfounded.

The new fad against cancer is undergoing clinical trials. It is CoEnzyme10 (CoQ10) which may reverse the malignancy of some cancer cell lines. However, it is important to be reminded that the effectiveness of these popular anti oxidant options vary from person to person and the type of cancer. For instance, direct contact to malignant cells like in the case of gastric cancers, tongue and throat cancers, and stomach cancers can increase the chance of cure than those in isolated body areas like bones, brain and lungs.

What Are the Most Powerful Antioxidants?

What Are the Most Powerful Antioxidants?

Grade school teachers taught you that vitamins and other essential minerals are necessary to keep your body in tiptop shape. Then as the new millennium entered, new wonder chemical compounds other than the ubiquitous forms started to gain popularity among consumers and significant interest from the medical and scientific community. Antioxidant (AO) level became the basis of nutrition. Conversations about dietary supplement are no longer confined to single capital letters and instead, a smorgasbord of compound such as phytonutrients, polyphenols, flavonoids and tocopherols are now considered mainstays. But with hundreds of nutrient compounds to aid human race towards a healthier life, do you know the best options that you can get? Here is a list of the most powerful AO and yes, no single capital letters in it.

1. Glutathione

More than a skin whitening food supplement, it is touted as the CEO of all due to its very high potency against free radicals. Some studies even show it as a possible cancer cure. The human body naturally produces this compound but only in small quantity. That is not even enough to brighten up dark spots on your face. To take advantage of the problem, manufacturers started to sell it in capsule, liquid and pill forms. But despite the hype, there is a downside to it and that seems to be a deep one. What people do not know is that certain enzymes in the gastric track break it up upon intake. It does not even reach your intestinal walls that absorb the compound. Thus, it is rendered futile. You are just like buying something to be burned to ashes.

This is the reason why many medical practitioners prefer to inject it directly to the blood stream like how dermatological clinics commonly do it. Unfortunately again, studies show that the increase in glutathione content in the blood after injecting it is only 50% at the highest. It is like paying for the whole package but availing only half of it. Unless technology comes up with a more effective way of body absorption, its powerful potency will remain in vitro and non-biological.

2. Resveratrol

Grapes leaped to popularity due to this new discovery. This vine fruit is the common source of this phytochemical but surprisingly, their skin, which contains it, do not possess significant amount to give the same effect as what clinical trials achieved. Peanut, which is the richest plant source, is also not enough, thus the manufacturing gaga.

Oprah uses it. Rihanna uses it. Millions are now using it in the hopes of getting a younger body. In laboratory experiments, it drastically increased the life span of drosophila by more than 20%. When you convert that to human life expectancy, it will allow you to live for up to 120 years old. Inauspiciously, that is not the case here. Human trials and its effects have limited records. A fruit fly’s body structure is so much different from that of a human being. But as they say, it is better to have some proofs than nothing at all.

3. OGCG (Green Tea Extract)

Green tea is believed to be a key to Asians’ healthier status than their Western counterparts. Although it is rich in caffeine content (even 20x higher than coffee), specialists still believe it is better than sipping a smoking brewed and espresso.

Said to be as powerful as resveratrol, there is really no concrete and conclusive scientific study to back-up the claim. However, some studies show that it is so powerful; it can even kill leukemia cells within 24 hours. For now, it is far from being the next chemodrug. It is promising nevertheless.

4. Grape Seed extract

As the name implies, it is produced from the oil of extracted grape seeds. Lauded for its potency 20 to 50x higher than Vitamin C and E respectively, it also shows promising characteristics to help stop edema from recurring on cancer patients and newly operated ones. So far, the human body’s absorption rate is acting better on this compound.
